Psoriasis

What is it?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease marked by periodic flare-ups of sharply defined red patches covered by a silvery, flaky surface. In psoriasis, the epidermal cell cycle is accelerated. Cell division in the basal layer occurs every 1.5 days which is roughly 1000 times faster than normal skin.  Since the cells move to the surface so rapidly, they do not differentiate and mature properly. The epidermal cells build up abnormally and become scaly. The epidermis in psoriatic lesions is three to five times thicker than normal.  Some people experience an associated arthritis that is similar to rheumatoid arthritis.

The exact cause is unknown, but it is thought that the primary process lies in the immune system with significant input from environmental factors.

Causes

Psoriasis is a single disease with several forms of expression and a range of severity. The form that psoriasis takes in an individual person likely depends on genetic influences, environmental factors (e.g., traumatic and climate), stress (particularly emotional stress), associated diseases (especially infections), medications, and the status of the immune system.  Some other potential causes are incomplete protein digestion, toxicity in the bowel, impaired liver function, alcohol consumption and eating excessive animal fat.

How can BioTech Healing help?

Many people do report specific foods that cause psoriasis to flare up.  This could well be due to specific food intolerances causing an upset to the individuals metabolism and thereby resulting in an immune system dysfunction.  After all psoriasis is a known autoimmune problem and food intolerances are known to be key factors in immune system dysfunction and also causing the body to become stressed.  Our nutritional health screening will provide you with a list of foods which should be avoided and eating plans & advice will also be given & discussed.  Supplementing the diet is also something that can be looked at as psoriasis sufferers often have a vitamin/mineral deficiency.
