(PMS, Premenstrual Stress, Premenstrual Tenstion, PMT)
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) was first recognised by the medical community in 1931.
Just before menstruation starts a woman's body and hormone levels change resulting in possible mood swings, depression, anxiety and irritability, usually in the two weeks before ovulation and menses. PMS or PMT is a combination of psychological, emotional and physical changes. There are also usually physical symptoms such as bloating, cramping, fatigue, breast tenderness, bad skin and food cravings. Some women also experience hot flushes, heart palpitations and weight gain. There is a bit emphasis on the emotional symptoms with PMS which can include crying, memory problems, insomnia, a lack of concentration, withdrawal, anger and possible aggression.
Up to 80% of women will experience at least some of these symptoms.
Following ovulation there is a reduction in sex hormones which could be a significant contributing factor to the onset of PMS. There is also a link between changes in serotonin and tryptophan neurotransmitter levels (responsible for mood and emotion) which also change in response to hormones produced by the ovaries.
How can BioTech Healing help?
It is commonly known that dietary factors heavily influence both the above chemical changes and the severity of symptoms experienced. We have had great success with reducing PMS symptoms following on from treatment under taken by clients after health screenings. Commonly we have identified vitamin B-6 deficiencies (related to an imbalance of estrogen, which in turn can lead to depression or dramatic mood swings); EFA deficiencies (needed to produce prostaglandin; magnesium deficiencies due to an excess of calcium from too much dairy produce (magnesium levels drop as it competes with calcium for absorption, leading to deficiency of one and toxicity of the other)
Deficiencies of vitamins A, C, E, other B vitamins and iron and zinc are also contributory factors.
Finally, dietary excesses of salt, caffeine, alcohol, smoking and animal fats aggravate symptomatic effects.
Replacement of dietary and nutritional deficiencies is vital to rebalance essential organ and reproductive function, as well as the avoidance of aggravating factors, excesses and toxicities.
Also, victims of PMS and hypoglycemia sometimes suffer the same symptoms. Therefore it has been suggested that following a modified version of the hypoglycaemic diet can help. We also use supplementation of the diet which can help to restore balance
