ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis)

It has been suggested that ME sufferers tend to have some kind of abnormality concerning their immune, muscular, cardiovascular and central nervous systems.

The beginning of the disease is often said to either feel like ‘flu', exposure to an allergen, or a severe infection from which the sufferer never seems to occur.

Symptoms

There are many reported symptoms, including general and joint pain, fatigue, muscle weakness, hypersensitivity, digestive disturbances, depression, immune system weakness, neuralgia, forgetfulness, confusion, insomnia, depression, hormonal abnormalities and cardiac and respiratory problems.

ME sufferers often express an increase in sensitivity to foods, chemicals and medications.

Causes

There have been suggestions over the years as to the causes of this disease but the most significant ones are:

Allergies (immune dysfunction caused by exposure to allergens, food allergies or intolerances)
Hormonal dysfunction (thyroid and adrenal disorders, and disruption of the hypothalamus)
Immune dysfunction: hyperactive autoimmune disorders or underactive immunodeficiency
Infectious agents - bacterial, fungal and viral infections
Nutritional deficiency or imbalance and malnutrition, with certain dietary practices, over-consumption of carbohydrates and poorly nutritive diets
Toxic agents (mercury, particularly from dental amalgams and vaccines, various organic solvents, herbicides, and several other chemical compounds). Aspartame (artificial sweetener) is also often blamed
